Writing:

Location! Location! Location! We all have stories of place worth telling—of stirring events, of unique and beautiful landscapes, of conversations in passing outside a favorite downtown shop or eatery. Crossing the Blues writing events celebrate local stories. Come Saturday, August 23, from 10-4 to the Colleen Johnson Community Room at the La Grande Public Library to share your story!

In preparation for the day, enter the Union County Poetry Contest! Categories are elementary/middle school, high school, and adult with a $50 first-place prize for each and a deadline of June 15. Poets must be Union County residents.

On August 23, a local authors’ fair will run all day, with books for sale and signing times throughout the day.

In addition, from 10-noon, you and your family, kids included, can contribute your own memories of Eastern Oregon to the ongoing Union County Oral History Project. Bring along family photos and/or photos of the region to talk about!

From noon-2, wander downtown La Grande in a "writing marathon" influenced by a sense of place. Based on the "New Orleans Writing Marathon," writers will form small groups, select several downtown destinations, and spend 20-30 minutes in each place writing and sharing writing.

From 2-4, participate in an open mic alongside local writers returning from the writing marathon and poetry contest winners.

Also, keep your eyes open and pencils ready for spontaneous writing opportunities throughout the day.
